A religion of sport reviews The Economist's coverage of the Olympic games.
The history of the modern Olympiad is littered with disaster and loss. There have been boycotts, terrorist attacks, allegations of corrupt officials, drug scandals and athletes stripped of their medals. For every city that has profited from the games, another suffers eye-watering losses. There is almost always a panic over whether stadia and infrastructure will be built in time. Yet still cities strive to win Olympic glory, over and over again.
